Newspaper Research

I began by searching "labor strike" between 1870 and 1890 and found a newspaper called The St. Landry Democrat from Opelousas, Louisiana on September 17, 1881. I read an article at the beginning that is headed with "New Orleans Gossip." It speaks of a cotton labor strike in the "Crescent City" and how excitement is following it. This strike was caused by greed and skilled workmen that felt unappreciated. The cotton industry was thriving and profits were increasing, so the workmen kindly asked their employers for an increase in wages as well. This was declined and claimed as impractical so the men stopped working. The employers began to recognize that this was hard work and it would be hard to find replacements, but they still did with the abundance of cotton workers in the South. The strikers gave up and accepted defeat only to go back to work. This is an interesting story relating to what we have already studied from the textbook. With some fields o...

Thinking About Success

Image
In my opinion hard work is the number one biggest factor in finding success economically. First off, economic success is a unique idea in the sense that most everyone has a different definition for it. Generally economic success is being where one personally wants to be in terms of wealth. I believe opportunity and skill follow in that order. Both opportunity and skill directly relate to hard work as working hard can improve both greatly. Working harder as a younger student in life can give better opportunities as one grows older and provide ones self with better skills to have and progress at a earlier stage in life. Luck follows behind in last as the least effective ingredient for success. This relates to the fact that luck is purely a lack of knowledge and just simple good  coincidence. For example one can win the lottery by luck, giving them the wealth to believe they are economically successful, but honestly they have worked for non...

Smoke Signals Writing

Image
Characters in the film Smoke Signals experience struggles regarding Native American History and stereotypes. Victor is a character who is trapped by the responsibility of always being defensive and independent as a stereotypical "warrior" should be. He is also burdened by the history of Native Americans being treated in an inferior way. The movie's characters change and grow, however, and their true Native American history and traditions is part of what makes that possible.  Thomas and Victor in Smoke Signals      Native Americans are traditional in ways like the fact that they like to dress similar to one another, eat a certain diet, and sing certain songs. This reminds me of how Victor tries to show Thomas how Indian men should wear their hair and embrace its freedom flowing long. Negative stereotypes commonly directed at Native Americans remind me of the policemen being quick to believe the white man in the movie who was drunk in the car...

Smoke Signals Thesis

Characters in the film Smoke Signals  experience struggles regarding Native American History and stereotypes by attempting to be the strong  Indians  that they are thought to be. Victor is a character who feels the responsibility of always being defensive and independent as he expects other people to treat Native Americans like he and Thomas in an inferior way. These characters are very different at the start of the movie but towards the end, we start to see the true Native American meaning and culture. Native Americans are traditional in ways like the fact that they like to dress similar to one another, eat a certain diet, and sing certain songs. This reminds me of how Victor tries to show Thomas how Indian men should  wear their hair and embrace its freedom flowing long. Negative  stereotypes commonly directed at Native Americans remind me of the policemen being quick to believe the white man in the movie who was drunk in the car wreck and blamed eve...
